A Dietitian’s Diaper Bag

As mentioned in my earlier blog, I am a mom of two boys under the age of three and we’re constantly on the go. As any mother can attest, when hunger pain strikes a toddler, you better be prepared. I hate to fall prey to the unhealthy choices that surround us at the mall, zoo and the pool, so I always pack healthy snacks in my diaper bag.  Some of our favorite portable, non-perishable snacks include:

  • applesauce (this applesauce in a pouch is portable and mess free)
  • raisins or other dried fruit
  • peanuts/almonds
  • whole grain crackers
  • rice cakes
  • granola bars

At least two of the above items can be found in my diaper bag at all times, so that I am never unarmed against a cranky toddler. I have learned that when hunger strikes, my sons will eat whatever I offer. If I am prepared with nutritious snacks, it is the perfect opportunity to fuel them with nutrient-rich foods their growing bodies needs. Our other favorite portable snacks that I add to the bag or pack in a small cooler as we are heading out the door include:

  • string cheese
  • yogurt tubes
  • grapes, bananas  or other fresh fruit
  • cheese and crackers (my oldest son’s all time favorite snack)
  • milk in a Sippy cup

The other great benefit for having healthy snacks in my diaper bag? It keeps me on track with my healthy eating. After all, moms can have snack attacks too!
