I am blessed with grandchildren between the ages of five and nine years old. Fortunately, they have been taught how to make healthy food choices. They know that snacks at Mamma’s house consist of fruit (fresh, canned and dried), certain vegetable creations, yogurt, ice cream, smoothies, cheese and crackers and occasionally cake. I stock a number of these in my refrigerator and cupboards for their visits. Their favorite snacks are grapes with cheese, ice cream and smoothies. They often design their own smoothies (under my supervision) and I am wowed at their creativity.
Just the other day we made smoothies and each one of my grandchildren created their own unique smoothie. Here are some of their creations:
Cookies & cream ice cream
Peanut butter
Banana
Low-fat milk
Ice
Low-fat strawberry yogurt
Frozen strawberries

As summer approaches, remember smoothies are an easy, refreshing and healthy snack that children love. Let children experiment and design a smoothie creation. I have found it’s best to let them prepare it. What a great way for kids (and adults) to get the nine essential nutrients that children need in their diets.
